Normandy Battlefield Tours

June 6th 1944 saw the beginning of the D-Day Landings, know as Operation Overlord, when British and American forces, and they’re allies,  took the war to Europe. The way in was through five beaches named Utah beach, Omaha beach, Gold Juno and Sword, which can be see on the Normandy Beaches Map. This phase of the operation involved over 5000 ships and 200,000 personnel. By the end of the day, over 120.000 men had landed on that 80 mile stretch of the Normandy coast, under extreme circumstances costing many lives.

The Cinema has depicted this event many times through such films as The Longest Day and more recently, Saving Private Ryan, showing graphically how desperate was the situation many men found themselves in on that day.

Now the opportunity to see many of the Normandy Battle sites including locations such as Utah Beach, Sainte Mere Eglise and Caen for yourself is available through Normandy Battlefield Tours, a popular way of making pilgrimage to the beaches and historic sites in the area. Veterans still make these D-day trips, although sadly, fewer of them today, as do their children and grandchildren, but trips on Normandy battlefield tours are open to everyone. Choosing between Hotels in Normandy or Campsites in Normandy would depend on the type of d-day tours that suit you best, but choice of either is plentiful and of good quality.

Battlefield-Tours-NormandyNormandy itself is a beautiful part of France and a fantastic holiday destination. From the many D-Day beaches you can travel inland, just as the allies did, but in a much friendlier way and visit the Normandy museums and war time attractions. On from there you will find rich and beautiful farmlands and pastures, magnificent Castles and other historic buildings as well as many D-Day museums and attractions pertaining to Operation Overlord. Lively French towns and villages with interesting markets selling superb local produce, all well worth a visit.

As well as Normand Battlefield Tours, there are Normandy Sightseeing Tours to take part in and some excellent Normandy Hotels or Normandy campsites to stay in. You can visit the gardens that gave inspiration to Monet, picnic on beautiful beaches with over 600 kilometres of coastline to explore and enjoy friendly local hospitality.

By all means take a Normandy Battlefield Tour, but don’t forget that Normandy has a lot more to offer and you should see and enjoy as much of Normandy as you can. For those who enjoy a tipple, as well as famous French wines, Normandy is a cider producing area and also famous for Calvados. Foodies will do well in Normandy as the region has many famous recipes to offer to the gourmet visitor, particularly being known as the birthplace of Brioches.
